📐 Planetary Aspects Explained
Aspects are the angular relationships between planets — the conversations happening across your birth chart. They reveal whether two planetary energies work together smoothly, create productive friction, or pull in opposite directions.
What Is an Aspect in Astrology?
An aspect is the angular distance between two planets, measured in degrees along the zodiac. Certain angles — 0°, 60°, 90°, 120°, and 180° — are considered especially meaningful because they create a strong geometric and energetic relationship between the planets involved.

Major Aspects
The five major aspects, along with the quincunx, form the backbone of aspect analysis:
- Conjunction (0°) — Planets merge energy; intense focus and fusion.
- Sextile (60°) — Cooperative and opportunity-oriented; requires some effort to activate.
- Square (90°) — Productive friction and tension that drives action and growth.
- Trine (120°) — Natural harmony and ease; talent flows with little resistance.
- Opposition (180°) — Polarity and awareness; balance is the key lesson.
- Quincunx (150°) — An awkward angle that demands creative adjustment.
Applying vs. Separating Aspects
An applying aspect is still moving toward its exact angle — its influence is building. A separating aspect has already passed exactness and is gradually loosening. Astrologers generally treat applying aspects as more potent because their energy is still intensifying.
The orb of an aspect is how many degrees it deviates from the perfect angle — a 0° orb is exact, while wider orbs (commonly 3°–8°, depending on the aspect and planets involved) describe a weaker, looser connection.
How to Read Aspects in Your Natal Chart
Start with the tightest-orb aspects in your chart — these are the strongest and most defining. Pay special attention to aspects involving the Sun, Moon, and Ascendant ruler, since these tend to color your whole personality.
Aspects between personal planets (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars) usually describe everyday personality dynamics, while aspects involving Saturn or the outer planets often point to longer-term life themes and generational influences.

The conjunction is often considered the simplest — it simply means two planets sit close together in the same degree of the zodiac, blending their energies into one combined expression.
Are squares and oppositions always bad?
No. Squares and oppositions create tension, but tension is what motivates growth and achievement. Many highly accomplished charts contain several challenging aspects that were channeled productively.
What's the difference between a natal aspect and a transit aspect?
