Western Astrology FAQ — Frequently Asked Questions

What is Western astrology?

Western astrology is a system of self-understanding based on the tropical zodiac, which tracks the Sun's position relative to the Earth's seasons rather than the fixed constellations.

What's the difference between Western and Vedic astrology?

Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac aligned to the seasons, while Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac aligned to the fixed stars, which shifts most placements by about 23 degrees.

What is a birth chart?

A birth chart (or natal chart) is a map of exactly where the Sun, Moon, and every planet were positioned at the moment and place of your birth.

What is my Big 3?

Your Big 3 are your Sun sign, Moon sign, and Rising sign — the three most individually defining placements in your birth chart.

Do I need my exact birth time for a reading?

For full accuracy, yes. Your Rising sign and house placements depend on an exact birth time, while your Sun, Mercury, Venus, and Mars signs can be found from your birth date alone.

What is a zodiac sign?

A zodiac sign is one of 12 thirty-degree segments of the ecliptic, each describing a distinct personality archetype based on where a planet — most often the Sun — was positioned.

What are astrological houses?

Houses are the 12 divisions of a birth chart, each governing a different area of life, from identity and money to relationships and career.

What are planetary aspects?

Aspects are angular relationships between planets — like conjunctions, squares, and trines — that describe how their energies interact with each other.

What does retrograde mean?

Retrograde describes the apparent backward motion of a planet as seen from Earth. It is an optical illusion, not an actual reversal of orbit.

What is a planetary transit?

A transit is the current position of a moving planet compared to your natal chart, used by astrologers to time events and understand current life themes.

What is synastry?

Synastry is the technique of comparing two birth charts side by side to understand the dynamics and compatibility between two people.

What is a composite chart?

A composite chart blends two people's charts into a single new chart representing the relationship itself, rather than comparing the two individuals.

What is a Solar Return chart?

A Solar Return chart is cast for the exact moment the Sun returns to the same degree it held at your birth — an event that happens once a year, close to your birthday.

What is a Lunar Return chart?

A Lunar Return chart is cast when the Moon returns to its natal degree, which happens roughly every 27 to 29 days, mapping short-term emotional cycles.

Is astrology scientifically proven?

Astrology is not considered a science in the empirical sense and is not accepted by the scientific community as predictive of real-world outcomes. It is best approached as a symbolic and reflective framework for self-understanding.

How accurate are daily horoscopes?

Daily horoscopes are written for an entire zodiac sign based on general Sun-sign transits, so they are far less precise than a personalized reading based on your full birth chart.
