♈ The 12 Zodiac Signs

📗 Beginner ⏱️ 7 min read

The 12 zodiac signs are the foundation of Western astrology — each one describing a distinct personality archetype based on where the Sun (and other planets) were positioned along the ecliptic at a given moment. Understanding the signs is the first step to reading any birth chart.

What Is a Zodiac Sign?

A zodiac sign is a 30° segment of the ecliptic — the Sun's apparent path through the sky over a year. The tropical zodiac used in Western astrology divides this 360° circle into 12 equal signs, starting with Aries at the spring equinox and ending with Pisces.

Every planet in your birth chart occupies one of these 12 signs at any given time. Your sign most commonly refers to your Sun sign — the sign the Sun was in on your birth date — but the Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, and every other planet also has its own sign placement.

The 12 Zodiac Signs at a Glance

Each sign has a symbol, a date range, a ruling planet, an element, and a modality. Here is a quick reference for all 12:

How to Find Your Zodiac Sign

Your Sun sign is determined by your birth date alone, using the date ranges above. But because the Sun moves into a new sign on slightly different days each year, anyone born within a day or two of a sign boundary should double-check with an exact birth chart rather than relying on the date range alone.

For a more complete picture, look beyond your Sun sign to your Moon sign and Rising sign — together these three placements form your Big 3 and give a far richer picture of your personality than the Sun sign alone.

Sun Sign vs. Rising Sign vs. Moon Sign

Your Sun sign reflects your core identity and ego — who you are at your essence. Your Moon sign governs your emotional inner world and instinctive reactions. Your Rising sign (Ascendant) is the mask you show the world — the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment you were born.

Because the Rising sign changes roughly every two hours, you need an accurate birth time — not just a birth date — to calculate it correctly, which is why a full natal chart is more precise than a Sun-sign horoscope.

The 12 Zodiac Signs — Frequently Asked Questions

What is my zodiac sign based on?

Your zodiac sign (Sun sign) is based on the date of your birth — specifically, which 30° segment of the tropical zodiac the Sun occupied on that day.

Can my zodiac sign change?

No — the sign itself never changes, but people born near a sign boundary ('cusp') sometimes calculate their date incorrectly. Using an exact birth chart removes any doubt.

What's the difference between zodiac signs and star signs?

In everyday use, 'zodiac sign' and 'star sign' both usually refer to your Sun sign. Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac (aligned to the seasons), while some other traditions use the sidereal zodiac (aligned to the actual constellations), which can shift the dates.

Do all 12 signs have equal significance?

Each sign carries an equally important archetype — none is inherently 'better' than another. Every sign's traits become strengths or challenges depending on the rest of the chart and how they are expressed.
